Homemade Spice Blends: The Perfect Christmas Gift Made with Love

The holiday season is a magical time filled with warmth, laughter, and the delicious aromas from festive meals. As you prepare for joyful gatherings and thoughtful gifts, consider the powerful impact of homemade spice blends. These blends not only enhance everyday cooking but also offer numerous health benefits. They make for wonderful gifts that share your love and creativity with friends and family. Let’s explore how these simple yet effective spice blends can support ultimate health and be the perfect addition to your Christmas celebrations!

Why Spice Blends?

Spice blends are a crucial part of culinary traditions worldwide, adding flavor and a host of health benefits. For instance, studies show that spices like turmeric and cinnamon are rich in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Incorporating these spices into your meals can have a significantly positive impact on your health. By creating your own spice blends, you control the freshness of each ingredient and avoid unwanted additives. Plus, they carry a personal touch that pre-packaged spices simply cannot match.

Top Health-Boosting Spice Blends

Here are three easy-to-make spice blends that you can prepare at home. Each recipe is designed to provide unique flavors and health benefits that can transform your cooking.

1. Turmeric Golden Milk Blend

Turmeric is well-known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties and high levels of antioxidants. This cozy blend is perfect for chilly winter nights.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup turmeric powder

  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon powder

  • 1 tablespoon ginger powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (to enhance absorption)

  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix together the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and coconut sugar.

  2. Transfer the mix to a mason jar or an airtight container.

Usage: Combine 1 teaspoon of the blend with your choice of milk (dairy or plant-based) and heat it gently. Adjust sweetness to your liking. I personally like to add my honey infuesd with cinnamon, onion, garlic, clove and fresh ginger.

This blend not only comforts; it also supports joint health and boosts immunity, making it ideal for the holiday season when you're entertaining guests and enjoying good food.

2. Flavored Herb Salt

Flavored salts are simply coarse or finely ground salts that been mixed with either fresh or dried herbs. A simple gift for your foodie friends or those who are starting their culinary adventures in the kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups coarse sea salt, coarse rock salt or flaky sea salt (Celtic, Himalayan, English, French, or Utah sourced salts)

  • 3 tablespoons fresh or 5 tablespoons dried rosemary

  • 1 tablespoon fresh or 3 tablespoons dried thyme

  • 6 navel oranges

Instructions:

  1. Measure out your sea salt of choice into a large mixing bowl and set aside. Next you will want to wash and dry your herbs and then remove the leaves from then stem and discard them from both the thyme and rosemary. Grab your cutting board and chop your herbs finely with a sharp knife. Measure out your herbs and add them to the bowl with your salt (If you have dried herbs, simply measure them out and add them to your bowl with the salt).

  2. Now you want to wash and dry your oranges. Grab your zester and remove the peel from all 6 oranges being careful not to get any of the white pith underneath (it's quite tart). If you do not have a zester, no worries! Simply grab a small sharp knife and peel away and then cut the strips into smaller pieces and add them to your bowl with the salt and herbs.

  3. Once you are done zesting or peeling your oranges you will want to take juice two of your oranges and add it to your bowl with the other ingredients (make sure you remove any seeds). Stir well with a wooden spoon ensuring all ingredients are incorporated.

  4. Spread out your mixture evenly onto a large baking sheet (I lined mine with parchment paper).

  5. Set your oven to 220 degrees F and add in your baking sheet. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the salt is no longer wet. Make sure to stir about halfway through to ensure your salt dried well.

  6. Break apart any clumps and store your herb mix in an airtight container away from light. For best flavor, consume within 3 months.

Notes: This recipe can be used with other citrus fruits like lemon, Meyer lemon, blood orange, or tangerines.

Usage:

  • Season or top cooked meats like roasted whole chicken or turkey and pan-seared fish fillets.

  • Season or top vegetables like roasted potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, mashed cauliflower, roasted butternut sqasush. sauteeed apearagus (one of my favorites), and french fries (on my list to try next!)

  • Add to your savory snacks like popcorn or homemade potato chips (post coming soon on this!)

  • Mix into softeded butter to make a compound butter that you can freeze, slice into rounds and top hot cooked foods to take it to the next level.

This blend not only enhances flavors but also supports digestive health. A study found that herbs like rosemary can help improve gut health and digestion.

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, ensuring they are blended well.
